Does Arizona Require Harassment Prevention Training?

Arizona doesn’t mandate harassment training the way some states do — but that doesn’t mean skipping it is a good idea. Here’s why, and what effective training looks like.

Unlike states such as California and New York, Arizona does not currently have a state law mandating harassment prevention training for private employers. It’s a question we get often, because business owners assume there’s a requirement they might be missing.

The absence of a mandate doesn’t mean training is optional in practice, though. Under federal law, an employer’s best defense against a harassment claim often hinges on being able to show it took reasonable steps to prevent and address harassment — and documented, regularly delivered training is one of the clearest ways to demonstrate that.

Effective training goes beyond a checkbox video nobody remembers watching. It should cover what harassment looks like in practice, how to report a concern, what happens after a report is made, and specific manager responsibilities — since managers are often held to a higher standard of responsiveness than individual employees.

We recommend refreshing this training annually, tracking completion for every employee, and pairing it with a clear, working complaint process. If a claim is ever filed, the training itself matters less than being able to prove it happened and that it was taken seriously.
